Joomla Banners Tutorial
How to Add Banners to Joomla Sites
By default Joomla comes with a component for managing banners. It allows you
to add different banners, organise them into categories and display them in
different places on your website. The first thing you need to do is to create a
new banner. To do this login to your Joomla admin area and go to
Components
-> Banners -> Banners.
On this page, click on the green
New
button at the top left part of the page.
Now, you need to fill in some information for the banner you're adding and
its code. First, choose a name for the banner. Name your banners with unique,
meaningful names so you can easily organise them later. Next, select
Custom
from the
Type drop-down. This will
allow you to paste the banner code you've obtained from the site you're
advertising. Finally, paste the banner code into the
Custom
Code field and press the
Save & Close
button.
Now you need to publish a new module to display your newly embedded banner.
To do this go to
Extensions -> Module Manager.
Once more, press the green
New button
in order to add a new module to your site.
Joomla will provide you with a list of the available module types that you
can choose from. Simply click on the banners type.
On this page, you need to choose a title for the module and the position
where it will be displayed. Note that the available positions and their names
depend on the template you're currently using. Different templates have
different places where you can add modules (in our case - banners). For the
purpose of this tutorial, we will add our banner in the right column of the
default Joomla template (position-7). Once you chose title and position for the
module, press the
Save button at the top
left part of the page.
That's it! You can now browse to your website front-end and see your newly
created banner.

How to Upgrade Joomla
Learn How to Keep Joomla Up-to-date
Table of contents:
Joomla versions explained
Joomla currently has two major versions that are officially supported:
Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3.x. The project developers work on both versions and
provide security and bug fixes for both of them. If you are using any of these
versions you should watch for minor release (like Joomla 2.5.x or Joomla 3.x).
Upgrading to a new version in the same branch is easily done through the Joomla
administrator with a single click.
There are also older Joomla major versions like Joomla 1.0 or Joomla 1.5
that are no longer supported. All users are strongly encouraged to move any
existing Joomla 1 installs to Joomla 2.5 as soon as possible. Also, once the
Joomla 3 branch reaches its 3.5 release it will become the recommended version
for all existing Joomla websites and Joomla 2.5 users will be encouraged to
move to the new branch too. However, moving from one Joomla major version to
another is not a one click experience and may require more efforts especially
for more complex websites.
To upgrade your Joomla manually, you need to access your administrative area
at
http://yourdomain.com/administrator. Once you do
that, Joomla will automatically check for new versions at its official
repository. If there is a new version available, you will see a notification in
your quick links. Click on the
Update now!
link to proceed.
Important!We
strongly recommend that you create a backup of your website before you initiate
the upgrade process.
Once you click on the link, you will be redirected to the Joomla update
page. Here, you will see information of your current Joomla version and the
latest one you will be upgrading to, the update package URL, and the
installation method. You shouldn't make any changes at this point - the default
settings should work just fine. All you have to do is click on the
Install
the update button.
In few moments, your Joomla website will be upgraded to the latest version
and you will be brought to a screen with confirmation for the successful
update!
Migrating from one major Joomla version to another
Get professional Joomla Migration to a higher version!
Our support team is experienced in supporting Joomla and can provide you
with professional migration service from your current Joomla website to a newer
version. You can easily order this service through your HelpDesk.
Migrating to a new major version can be tricky mostly because usually the
template and extensions currently used by you may not be compatible with the
new Joomla version. This means that once you complete the migration process you
will have all your content transferred to the new version, but may need to
change or update all templates and extensions before your website actually
start working.
You can migrate a Joomla website only to the immediate next major version,
meaning that if you currently have Joomla 1.5 and want to start using Joomla 3,
you need to migrate first to joomla 2.5 and then to 3.
Important!Never
start a migration without making a backup of your current Joomla! This may
spare you days of website downtime in case any important extension you use
turns out to be incompatible with your new Joomla version.
In this tutorial we will describe how to move from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.
To begin with the migration, first you need to login to your administrative
area. Then, navigate to http://yoursite.com
/administrator/index.php?option=com_joomlaupdate.
This will take you directly to the Joomla Update page. Since there is still no
long-term release of the Joomla 3.x branch, you will have to switch to
short-term release settings for the update server. To do this, click on the
Options
button.
A pop-up will appear with all the available settings for the Joomla Update
component. All you have to do is click on the drop-down menu next to the
Update
Server label and select
Short Term Support.
Finally, click
Save & Close.
Once you switch to the short-term version update server, Joomla will
immediately detect an available update. Press the
Install
the Update button to proceed with the migration.
Joomla will take a few seconds to migrate your content. Please do not close
your browser window during that process. Finally, you'll see a confirmation for
the successful migration from your newly upgraded Joomla admin area.

How to Auto-Update Joomla
Learn How to Enable Auto-Updating for Joomla on SiteGround servers
In this tutorial we will show you
how to use the Joomla! Auto-Update tool developed by us in order to keep your
website always safe and up-to-date.
This
tutorial will teach you how to perform the following actions:
What will happen when Auto-Update is enabled?
How to use the tool for immediate Joomla update?
Accessing Joomla! Auto-Update
First, you need to access your cPanel. To do that, login to your User Area
and go to the
My Accounts tab. On this
page, you will find a list of all of your hosting accounts with SiteGround.
Select the one you want to install Joomla to and click on the
Go
to cPanel button next to it.
Once you access your cPanel account, open the
Joomla!
Auto-Update tool located in the
Sitebuilding Software
section.
How to have your Joomla listed in the tool
All Joomla installations you make through SiteGround install tools will be
listed in the Auto-Update tool by default. The tools will show their current
versions and information if newer version is available.
If you have a manually installed Joomla, or do not see any of your Joomla
installs, just use the “
Add URL” button in the
bottom right corner.
What will happen when Auto Update is enabled?
When your Joomla Auto Update is enabled you will be notified by email when
there is a new Joomla version and your website will be automatically updated 24
hour later. Thus you do not need to keep track of new versions neither perform
any manual updates. However, you can still be in control of the process as we
send you an early notification and you can decide to skip any update you do not
want to be performed.
Important!
Your Joomla website will be updated to the latest version of its branch. This
means that if you have a Joomla 2.5.6 site, it will be restored to Joomla 2.5.8
(which is the latest version by the time we are writing this tutorial) and if
you have a Joomla 3.0.1 site, it will be updated to 3.0.2 if that's the latest
version. This tool will not migrate your Joomla site from one main branch to
another, for example it will not update your site from Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 1.5
or from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.0.
How to use the tool for immediate Joomla
update?
In addition to scheduled auto updates, the tool can also be used for
immediate one-click updates of your Joomla. This option is available for all
Joomla installations, including the ones for which the automatic function is
disabled.
How to disable the Auto-Update?
You can cancel any scheduled update using the Actions dropdown. Thus the
particular Joomla version will not be applied to your Joomla. However, this
action does not disable the autoupdater in general and once the next version is
released it will be applied normally.
If you want to disable the Auto-Update function completely, choose the
disable action from the drop down.
How to revert an update, that have already taken place?
Note, that if any issues with your website occur due to the automatic update
feature, you can always restore your site to its state before the update.
Joomla Auto-Update stores a backup of your website each time, it performs an
automatic update. If something goes wrong, simply select your site and select
the
Restore latest backup action.
